Russia: Israel Undermining Basis of Its Own UN Admittance and Membership
At a recent UN Security Council meeting, Russia’s UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzya discussed the “paradox” of Israel—with the help of its “American allies”—deliberately “undermining decisions and understandings which allowed it itself, Israel, to join the UN” in the first place:
“In 1949, the state of Israel joined the [United Nations] on the condition that it would uphold and implement two key UNGA resolutions: Number 181, which contained a plan to divide Palestine into two states, an Arab state and a Jewish state, and 194 on refugees, which is the very basis for UNRWA’s mandate.
Moreover, in the ICJ’s second advisory opinion, which was adopted by a UNGA resolution, there is a clear conclusion about the fact that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, including Eastern Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, is unlawful.
So, we have a paradox on our hands: By sabotaging the implementation of the aforementioned resolutions, Israel is in fact knowingly and purposefully undermining decisions and understandings which allowed it itself, Israel, to join the UN.
And yet, to this day, Palestinians are being denied their full membership in the UN. And this denial is occurring with the active connivance of the aforementioned American allies of Israel, who are unilaterally casting vetoes such as the one against the relevant draft resolution drafted by Algeria…”
This statement was flagged by journalist Sam Husseini, who agreed with Nebenzya’s assessment:
Yesterday, I heard the Russian representative basically argue (correctly) that Israel has been in violation of UN resolution 181 — which was the basis of it being allowed into the UN in the first place. https://t.co/Bf9MxzdgPg
